Island Chair Series
-
Some notes about the following paintings:
The chair series began after my first journey to Cuba as an adult. Traveling through the streets of Trinidad, (where my family still lives) I looked in the large Colonial windows of the homes and noticed a great many people in chairs, sitting, passing the time away. I later decided to use the chair to represent the human being, calmly sitting and waiting for change…
The chair also serves as a "pedestal" to hold simple objects - metaphors for the scarcity of items we may take for granted - basic foods, water, freedom.
The series extends in numerous directions, including the "Equilibrium Series" which represents the delicate balance of life. Life in Cuba is a balancing act due to the economic difficulties that surround her people. To live there you must be VERY creative and resourceful. I met someone there a few years ago that said, "I think Atlas has lost his balance here…" - It really struck me.
