EXHIBITION CATALOG TEXT FROM "FAR FROM CUBA / LEJOS DE CUBA / LOIN DE CUBA", AIX-EN-PROVENCE, FRANCE:
I grew up all around Cuba. West of Cuba, southwest of Cuba, southeast of Cuba and north of Cuba, never in Cuba. Cuba was always in the center of the Americas; the Pearl of the Antilles. I flew over her, around her and beside her, however, not to her. Why was Cuba untouchable? How does a young mind understand that you cannot be in the place where you are from.
Living throughout Latin America and the United States exposed me to many social and cultural experiences. For a long time, however, Cuba remained a question without an answer.
When I finally set foot on Cuban soil, smelled her air and felt her voice inside me, I discovered a new perspective, a new sense of direction, and a new equilibrium. Cuba is a piece of my soul, a blessing, a tragic contradiction. I am west, southwest, southeast and north, and I am Cuba too.
